Let's Get Started!

What changes will you make? How will you become ‘fitUnited’? Even making small changes can have a big impact. Every three months we will have a new menu of changes you can pledge to implement. You might want to start small, then encouraged by your success, maybe next quarter you'll be a little more ambitious!

Choose from the menu below, and follow us on facebook and twitter (@fitUnitedPgh), we'll be sending out hints and tips to help you achieve your goals.  We will soon be launching our competition where you will be eligible to win some fantastic prizes just by sending us your pictures showing how you, your family, your colleagues or the children you care for are being 'fitUnited'! Stay tuned - we will be posting details in Spring 2013.

Each quarter we are going to ask all of our partners to report back and tell us what changes they have made. Even if you're not a partner, just click here to email us a picture, we'd love to know what you're doing. See our menu below, or click here to download.

Winter Menu – Jan/Feb/Mar

APPETIZERS

A light bite – easy to digest!
Small but significant changes that can be adopted at a personal level.

1. TRY AT LEAST ONE NEW SEASONAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLE EACH MONTH
A wonderful way to introduce new and healthy foods into your family’s diet. Try choosing locally sourced seasonal items (healthier for us and the environment).

2. CHANGE SNACKING HABITS AT HOME
Agree as a family to eliminate easy access to chips and other high calorie snacks, instead keep a bowl of fruit on the kitchen counter for snacks!

3. STOP BUYING SODA
Instead of soda, why not try all natural juice mixed with water.

MAIN COURSE

These menu items are more substantial and will take more time to digest..
Institutionalize some key changes within your workplace.

1. MAKE CHANGES IN YOUR VENDING MACHINES AT THE OFFICE
Try eliminating high calorie snacks altogether, look at suppliers that focus on healthy foods. If you can’t eliminate high calorie snacks altogether, consider subsidizing healthy snacks making them more affordable in your workplace.

2. SERVE ONLY HEALTHY FOOD AND DRINKS AT OFFICE MEETINGS AND GATHERINGS
Make a commitment to stop serving sodas or high calorie snacks at your office meetings and staff gatherings… think water, juice, healthy salads and sandwiches

3. START A WALKING CLUB AT THE OFFICE
Create a little healthy competition amongst colleagues, why not have walking teams with pedometers who get together once a week and walk during their lunch hour – consider awarding a prize to the team that racks up the most steps over a 3 month period!

DESSERT

The icing on the cake so to speak… a few ‘sweet’ treats to share with your family…

1. GO, SLOW, WHOA!
Download the ‘Go, Slow, Whoa’ map for your kitchen to help guide your family’s food choices (click here)

2. BIKE OR HIKE!
Once a month, go on a family hike or bike ride – a great treat for the kids. Look at Venture Outdoors, Bike Pittsburgh or the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for ideas!

3. WHAT’S FOR DESSERT?
When eating out, once a week try skipping dessert, or choosing a fruit option if possible.
